Understanding Executive Function Challenges
If you struggle with starting tasks, remembering steps, or switching between activities, you're not lazy - you just function a bit differently in the world. Executive dysfunction sucks. Time-blindness sucks. Brain fog sucks.
What Is Executive Function?
Executive function is your brain's management system. It handles:
- Task initiation - starting things without procrastinating
- Working memory - holding information while using it
- Planning - breaking big tasks into steps
- Time management - estimating how long things take
- Flexibility - adapting when plans change
- Emotional regulation - managing frustration and stress
When Executive Function Is Impaired
People with ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, or brain injuries often struggle with executive function.
Common experiences include:
- Knowing what to do but can't start
- Forgetting tasks immediately after thinking of them
- Underestimating or overestimating time
- Difficulty switching between activities
- Getting overwhelmed by multi-step tasks
- Paralysis when facing too many choices
It's Not About Willpower
Here's what many people don't understand: trying harder doesn't fix executive function deficits. Just like telling someone with poor vision to "just squint harder," it misses the point entirely. You're not going to find the answer by watching another TikTok from some productivity influencer. That never worked for me though I fell into many rabbit holes chasing the "one trick!" that will finally make me productive.
Effective Accommodations
ProductivityMaxxxing might be a fun topic for doomscrolling, but it doesn't really help me accomplish anything. Fortunately, there are tools that actually help:
- External memory - write everything down immediately
- Single focus - one task at a time, not long lists
- Visual cues - reminders you can see, not just remember
- Reduced decisions - pre-plan what to do and when
- Transition support - warnings before switching tasks
- Low-shame environment - "not today" is always an option
The last thing on the list is why tasks in TearOff have "Skip for Today" as an option. Some days, I simply don't have it in me to even attempt a thing so pushing it to tomorrow without worrying about ruining a streak or getting nagged with reminders is important. Tomorrow exists.
